Watch Scaling
After measuring the watch dimensions, a model was created in SolidWorks. To make sure that everything would scale properly, I first made a mockup from cardboard, that was painted to give some authenticity. With a properly scaled cardboard mockup, I now had all the dimensions for the piece parts.
The watchband links were fabricated from laser cut pressed wood from a single large piece of plywood. Each piece was identical in size and shape. Three pieces would be glued together, sanded and a hole drilled through the assembled piece. These would comprise the side links of the watchband. The center link consisted of eight pieces. A wooden dowel was inserted into each hole that would serve to provide a way of linking the pieces while providing the rotational motion needed in a watchband.
All assembled link pieces were then painted with a primer and sanded for smoothness.
Each link was then covered with a mirror like coated sheet of adhesive coated paper.
The watch face body was made from MDF cut and sanded on a lathe. The bottom of the watch face consisted of an aluminum disk cut from the bottom of a frying pan.
The second hand, minute hand, hour hand and watch face pieces were made from stainless steel and laser cut to the correct dimensions. The watch face pieces were glued to the top side of the aluminum disk.
The more complex shaped pieces were 3D printed PLA that were glued to the main watch face body.
Finally, all the pieces were assembled into the final working 5X scale Pierre Cardin wristwatch.
